Top Ten Tuesday: Childhood Books

There are so many different types of childhood books that i cherish and adore! But sadly i have to choose 10. So here is a list of my top ten!

#10 When kitty was told that her favorite foods were all gone and that all that was available were…Asparagus, Beets, Cauliflower,Dill . . .

#9 When author and artist David Shannon was five years old, he wrote a semi-autobiographical story of a little kid who broke all his mother's rules. He chewed with his mouth open (and full of food), he jumped on the furniture, and he broke his mother's vase! As a result, all David ever heard his mother say was "No, David!" Here is his story.

#8 If you dont know who Dr. Seuss is... then you don't have a childhood.

#7 The quintessential cautionary tale, Peter Rabbit warns naughty children about the grave consequences of misbehaving. When Mrs. Rabbit beseeches her four furry children not to go into Mr. McGregor's garden.

#6 "Once there was a tree...and she loved a little boy."

#5 One night Max puts on his wolf suit and makes mischief of one kind and another, so his mother calls him 'Wild Thing' and sends him to bed without his supper. That night a forest begins to grow in Max's room and an ocean rushes by with a boat to take Max to the place where the wild things are.

#4 I think all librarians teachers read this or you read it to a child. 

#3 Probably one of the most snobbish little girl I have ever read but really did enjoy her books!

#2 I wouldn't mind reading this series again.

Paper Towns

So a few days ago, I found out the author John Green, is coming out with a new movie based off his novel Paper Towns. The excitement i felt for this was over the bars! I really do like the actors and actresses for this film. I feel like they fit the characters in the book perfectly.

John Michael Green was born on August 24, 1977, to Mike and Sydney Green in Indianapolis. He received his early education from Lake Highland Preparatory School and Indian Springs School. His experience of school was similar to other social outcasts who get bullied by arrogant people. He earned double graduation degrees in English and Religious Studies from Kenyon College. He worked as a student chaplain after graduation in a children’s hospital. His initial aim was to become an Episcopal priest. However, the time he spent among children with terminal-illness stimulated him to become a writer. Afterwards, he worked as a publishing assistant forBooklist, a book review journal. Green wrote numerous reviews on literary fictions mostly concerning conjoined twins or religion of Islam.

While working as a critique he also began writing his debut Looking for Alaska. Eventually, he had his project completed and published by 2005. It is a coming-of-age romance novel about a teen Miles. The novel is inspired by Green’s time at Indian Springs. Unlike other YA writers, Green has broadened the horizon of YA novels’ subjects matter. He introduced more philosophical approach to the issues in a teenager’s life. The unorthodox form and content of the novel had it earned the American Library Association’s Michael L. Printz Award in 2006. The book made a record staying at New York Times best seller list for the span of 7 years.

When by Victoria Laurie: An Introduction and A Review

Synopsis:

Maddie Fynn is a shy high school junior, cursed with an eerie intuitive ability: she sees

a series of unique digits hovering above the foreheads of each person she encounters.

Her earliest memories are marked by these numbers, but it takes her father’s premature

death for Maddie and her family to realize that these mysterious digits are actually 

death dates, and just like birthdays, everyone has one.

Forced by her alcoholic mother to use her ability to make extra money, Maddie identifies 

the quickly approaching death date of one client's young son, but because her ability

only allows her to see the whenand not the how, she’s unable to offer any more insight.

When the boy goes missing on that exact date, law enforcement turns to Maddie.

Soon, Maddie is entangled in a homicide investigation, and more young people 

disappear and are later found murdered. A suspect for the investigation, a target for the

murderer, and attracting the attentions of a mysterious young admirer who may be

connected to it all, Maddie's whole existence is about to be turned upside down. Can she

right things before it's too late?

My Review:

I’ve always loved the novels I’ve discovered by Victoria Laurie. It is true that the genre was really different, as she writes a chick-lit series with ghosts. But I was curious to see what the author could write in another genre, a paranormal YA with a thriller touch. Yes something really different. Since her childhood, Maddie is able to see the death dates of all the people she meets or when she looks at a picture. This is a difficult gift to wear but it helps her and her mother to earn some money. Yet it is also a job that can bring many problems and the proof is with her latest client. In fact, our young heroine discovers the future death of the young son of her client and she does not believe her. Yet Maddie and her best friend are doing all they can by reminding the young woman to be careful. Unfortunately, despite their warnings, the boy is kidnapped and our girl becomes the ideal suspect. She was already considered as a witch and mocked by more than one, but now everyone thinks she is the culprit, starting with the police. When the disappearances increase and that bodies are 

discovered, Maddie will have to survive whatever happens to her. Trying to understand 

what is happening, to convince the police that she really has a gift and to avoid

becoming a victim herself … Yes Maddie will have to manage a lot of things, but that’s 

not all because she will try to avoid abuse in schools or bad people attention. 

It’s hard to see what the girl has to go through, the police does not believe in her gift and 

is convinced that she is the culprit. She is 16 years old but has to manage verbal attacks, 

accusations and even the police attention toward her best friend. I was very curious to 

find out who was the culprit and I confess that I did not see it coming. I was very surprised 

to learn about his identity at the end of history. Surprised also about the identity of Aidan, 

the boy for whom she has a weakness. So yes I had a great time with this novel. It was

interesting to discover Maddie, to see her love for her alcoholic mother, or even the 

indispensable help of his uncle who loves her more than anything and who wished to

take her to live with him. 

In conclusion, it was a good discovery, even if it is true that I had already read something 

like this. I loved to monitor the investigation of these disappearances and I am curious to 

read more now if we have a second novel.
